sorry for the late reply. I been a bit busy.
Your calcs are encouraging. Even though you may have lost me. But its interesting stuff.
Personally I think the cable may still be under rated and not sure why its not over heating. Luckily its temporary.
However you have brought up some interesting stuff.
The volt drop 12V to 8V was on the longest run of about 4m (7 strand) cable and 7m of strip with about 0.5m link cable.
The LEDs do get dimmer but not as much as you would think. Its noticeable but you wouldn't want to stare at it for long!
It makes sense what you are saying, the current demand becomes less with the volt drop along the circuit.
But with this in mind makes it a very tricky calculation taking into account cable resistance, strip resistance, diode Vd.....(if this is what you are saying).
It would explain why the current demand is significantly less than expected and a stroke of luck for this project.
I will come back to this later and see if I can put some calculations together.
