Component needed - PLEASE HELP!

Post by dj__antek » Tue Dec 28, 2010 3:20 pm

Hello everyone,

I am looking for a (burned) component to my hard drive.
It is a protection diode (I suppose) and all what I can see on it is - GP634
Where can I buy it? I tried in Maplin and on-line generally - can't find it ://

Cheers in advance.

Martin

Hi Martin,
All I can think of is that GP stands for General Purpose & 634 don't know ( could mean IN634 Diode ) try a general purpose IN4001 if you think it is there for protection EG: reverse Voltage etc look on the board for the same Diodes and measure them in or out of circuit you have very little to loose, let me know how you go.

Hello Frank,

Thanks for your replay.
It was an external hard drive and accidentally I connected a wrong AC adapter.
20 V instead of 12.
Please see the attachment.

There is no other the same diode, just this one (GP634) is a bit wider than the others.
I found that VITROHM company making diodes starting with GP code, however I can't find exactly the same.

p.s The diode looks very similar to this one - http://in.digikey.com/1/1/414414-diode- ... 20-13.html

Hi Martin,
I don't know if you got my Email but here it is and all the best for 2011 Mate.
Try and buy another External Hard drive the same model & swap
PCB that is one option, the other is try & find someone in the business of
Data recovery & have the Data saved off yours.or find a Electronics Tech to
fix PCB for you, what is the Make & Model etc of that External Hard drive.

M8 just replace those two diodes D6 and the other one or atleast D6, its because voltage was to high and diode protected other parts from overload, by breaking the line, when soldering, don't confuse the sides and use any diodes that support no more then 12V voltage, so if you put in wrong plug they would protect the PCB.
Only by location and results you can suggest, that its power problem. You see the middle pins of the power plug are for ground, 2x gnd means, less noise, the side ones are + and -. I think - is alright, not signal, because you are measuring from wrong side. Diode is for cuting signal and for blocking alternate current, for example if diode is soldered in open gate position, which is very low resistance which doesn't effect normal work of other components of scheme it allows only the positive one to go through. If its put other side, then it block the current if it is changing and allows only the negative one. So basically these two diodes do diode brigde function, which changes AC to DC. And if the source is already DC then it only protects the PCB from plug inserted wrong side and higher voltage then allowed (fuse function).
