I can't figure out what type of capacitor to order?

Post by TIMComputers » Thu Jul 21, 2011 5:51 pm

If anyone here knows what the attached Capacitor is it would be much appreciated. A customer of mine purchased a universal laptop power cord and it was the wrong voltage and it melted the solder on the DC Jack as well as blew out an identical capacitor to this one. But when looking on Digi-key I can not figure out what I should order as a replacment any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

P.S. If there is any reading material you could point me in the direction of on how to identify capacitors, It would be appreciated.

Hi,

Its a surface mount tantalum capacitor, value 100uF +/- 10% (see http://www.electronics2000.co.uk/data/i ... pmarks.php and http://www.electronics2000.co.uk/calc/c ... ulator.php).

The only trouble is I'm not sure of the voltage rating - I wonder if the '6' should be '16' (a common value) and the '1' has rubbed off, but I'm really not sure. Is the adapter working without the other capacitor? If so you could measure the voltage across it. If not, check what voltage ratings will physically fit and get the highest that will fit. In fact you can probably work it out from the body dimensions. You also need to be sure that the one that blew up was the same value,I guess the thing is too far gone to read the markings?

I'd replace them both - the one pictured looks a bit damaged too. Finally, make sure the board is covered before powering up - I've recently had a batch of tantalums with the polarity marking back-to-front , and they blew up quite violently. I was very glad I wasn't hit by a piece.

Do the ohms matter?
Sorry I'm new to this and I think maybe I need to see if the community college has an introduction to Electronic Engineering course.
