Regulator Rectifier for 12 charging systems

Hi there, I am wondering if anybody has diagrams and specs on how to build regulator rectifiers for 12v charginging systems (ie motorcycle, rideon mower) i am presently a electronics virgin and am reading up on the basics in a book called demystifying electronics and am getting a gist off the complexity, i am not fooling my self, the dificulty i may be facing, but with a bit of determination and a little help from you blokes i may be able to work myway to building one, any help would be appreciated.....yes i know it may be cheaper to buy one but what would i acheive by taking the easy way out.......cheers
