Gocart build

Post by andysnappy » Wed Aug 26, 2015 6:59 am

Hi. I know this is fairly simple stuff but im struggling to get my head round the wiring for the 12v racing car ive build for my kids. I have used a press to make switch going into a 12v switching relay, (4 post), to the motor and has worked well for 2 years. I want to develop it for reverse also. I have bought another relay and switch and was hoping to run another circuit by its side in the oposite polarity but cant seem to get it right. Could anyone help me with a wiring diagram please or advice? thankyou.

Off the top of my head 4 relays ( I will have a think if there is a better way) you need to disconnect both pos and neg side then reconnect the opposite way round.

You also need the right switch, it must switch both pos and neg with one flick, off, and pos and neg to the reverse relays with the opposite flick.

If you have two buttons and you press both at once you will fry.

I assume this is a single speed electric motor driven machine?

Sorry, you just need a three position switch circuit ,A on, off, B on. Ie a 3 position rocker. A switches 2 relays and B switches 2 relays.

You could have a 2 position rocker and a button, the rocker is forward/reverse the button is on/off.
I think that's about it unless you want digital.

Any one else want to comment?

Maybe a fifth relay for the button.
I have difficulties uploading photos on this tablet, I should think you could work that out.

it is single speed, the opperation buttons are under a foot pedal, tilt it forward to drive ahead and tilt back for reverve so only one button can be pressed at a time.

Right so you've got the switch you need 4 relays. Can you see how to do it with 4 relays. Tilt one way and two relays trigger its just the same switch wiring as one relay only using two. The switching off isolates both pos and neg, one relay in the pos circuit and the other in the neg.
The same with the pos and neg reversed for reverse gear.

Let me know if you understand that, I can try to make it clearer if you want.

Scrap yards are a great source for relays, usually £1 for a hand full or free.
