Help with audio cabling

Post by BLYTHE312 » Tue Apr 07, 2009 8:36 pm

Hi.Firstly I should say that I have no understanding of electronics, and secondly that this my first time on a forum so please bear with me! I have a Samsung LCD TV with a Panasonic BluRay player wired up to it. I haven't the room for all the garb that comes with a surround sound speaker kit, so I thought I could just somehow rig my TV up to my Teac stereo system which comprises an amp, tuner and cd player. I have looked on amazon at the cabling, but I'm completely lost! I have no clue what to get and where to plug it......is there any nice person that could advise me,and help me get my silly female head around it all? Many thanks.

Hi

What you want to do should be possible assuming there is a spare input on the amplifier. You could use any spare input - such as a TAPE or MP3 player input. The inputs are probably on a pair of phono (sometimes called RCA) connectors - normally white for left and red for right - see http://www.electronics2000.co.uk/pin-out/phono.php.

Depending on the TV you may also have an identical pair of phono sockets on the back marked AUDIO OUT or similar. If you do you simply need a phono to phono cable to connect the TV and amp (linking red to red and white to white). You can get one of these at Maplin, Currys or similar (maplin code L05BA for 1.5m or L06BA for 3m).

If you don't have AUDIO OUT sockets on the TV you should be able to get the audio out of the SCART socket (large 21-pin rectangular connector). To do this you need an adapter from SCART to phono such as http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=26540 (maplin code L84BA if the link doesn't work), as well as a phono cable.

If you get stuck tell us the model of the TV so we can track down what outputs it has.

Regards,

Simon
