I have a disabled child who is currently causing absolute mayhem at bed times much to his entertainment, we have tried everything and my last hope is creating a sound switch which turns off when noise is heard.
Basically he has sensory equipment in his room which projects some nice pictures onto the ceiling with the sound of the sea or birds etc. He would hate for this equipment to be turned off so the idea is turn it off when there is noise in the room. Im hoping he will soon realise that his 'games' are causing his sensory equipment to switch off.
Im quite handy with a soldering Iron, but I wouldn't know where to start with what equipment I would need to achieve this.
The sensory equipment is run off the mains.
Please help... I need sleep

Hiya, I'm sorry to hear that you aren't getting any sleep.
Building a circuit that responds to sound shouldn't be too hard, building one that can discriminate between your son, his sensory equipment, the tv, passing cars etc. However could be a challenge depending on the environment.
I'm not sure what the range is like but would something like this help?

If you ensured that you bought the rf versions as opposed to the ir versions you may be able to achieve a similar albeit manual effect?
Kind regards
Nick

Hehe not a problem, it might just be worth checking that the range is good enough especially if you have thick stone walls etc.
I hope it all works out for you
