Hello,

I have what might be a bit of a strange request for assistance.

I'd like to build (or buy) a device that gives 2 people a means to talk to one another via headphones, whilst simultaneously listening to music coming in from something like a CD player. I've drawn a paintbrush special to elaborate:



Any ideas on how I'd go about building one (I'm pretty good with a soldering iron, just useless at planning electronics) or buying one?

Sounds like you are making a sytem for a motorcycle or something. In any case, you should do a google search on Op Amp Audio Mixers and go from there. You will find several schematics that you could base your system on. This should be a very simple project, but remember to breadboard it first. Good luck.

Personally m8, this is what I'd do -

These say they take a "standard" mic/speaker.. so I can assume they are either 3.5mm split by two for each seperate, mic and speaker or they combine the two.. so investigating further
--> this looks like the "standard" connection, again I assume one is for mic and one is for speaker
--> ok another picture of a "standard" connection looks just like the ones you find on your PC for mic & speakers

So, now get yourself a "standard" PC headset & mic or go to Maplins & try the selection of your choice out, but to make it work with a CD player you need one more thing, which is going to require those soldering skills .. briefly

You want to take that item, buy it twice, then chop it & re-solder it together so that it terminates with the two (stereo, 3.5mm feeds) into another port (female) connector that you can plug your headphones into..
Then, you will have another two ports (female) which you plug your cd-player & radio into via this connection (again from maplins) -

So get yourself two of those for the radio & cd-player..
(You might find that you have to turn the volume up louder than usual for both radio & cd-player and also that the batteries last slightly less longer than usual.. but hey can't have it all )

Your mic will plug in seperately to the radio & won't require any tinkering.. Just make sure you wonder down to Maplins and look at all this stuff before you buy it, making sure that it all plugs together.. Also I'm sure the chaps in Maplin will help out in anyway they can
