Searching out Surface Mounted components

I am having extreme difficulty in discovering what some components are on a faulty PCB. I can only decipher very short identifiers on them such as 101, 102, a6, Y111H, F7 Z2 (all this last on one component) and some seem to have no identification at all.
Typing these identifiers into google produces weird and wonderful things but nothing helpful. Some of the components seem to bestride the tracks and I am not sure whether they are in contact or have a clearance. I would be very grateful if someone could start me along the road to understanding what I have, prior to sorting out a solution, hopefully.
Thank you.
PS
Since posting this query I discovered, completely by accident, that I had a loose connection on the heating element circuit. The problem has gone away since I re-soldered it! I have a habit of looking for complicated faults where simple ones exist.
However, I would still like to find out how to trace surface contact components.
