Capacitor and resistor in series

Post by Fractal Cat » Thu Jan 14, 2016 4:52 pm

Hi,

I'm trying to understand a schematic and within it there is a capacitor and resistor in series, the capacitor comes before the resistor.

Can someone explain what's going on here?

Thx

FC.

The resistor is controlling the charging/discharging current, ie the time taken for the cap to charge and or discharge.

Time is the key word.

When the supply is switched on and as it is before the resistor it means the voltage between the two will go down with time (as the capacitor charges)

If a resistor is connected in series with the capacitor forming RC circuit, the capacitor will charge through the resistor until the voltage across the capacitor reaches that of the supply voltage. It helps to control the the charging /discharging current.A capacitor can only discharge by letting charge flow out of it,and electrical current only flow through resistor.

Can you post a copy of the schematic please?
