Post by David » Mon Oct 05, 2015 6:17 am

I am being asked to check with updates, although I have already done so!

Hi David, I'm assuming this is Electronics Assistant so I've moved the topic. What versions of Electronics Assistant and Windows are you running? Current version of EA is 4.31.

Hello. I am still being nagged by the update reminder, even when I say "yes" I an told that I have the latest version. In desperation I have reinstalled V4.31 - also to no effect. Can this be sorted out, please? I am running V4.31 and Windows 7 Pro 64bit.

Hi David,

Sorry for the late reply, I've only just seen this. I'm not quite sure what's going on, I've not had any issues or reports from other users about similar problems on Windows 7 using the latest version - older versions that were released prior to Windows 7 did have issues.

When does the software ask you to check for updates - is it every time you start it up? From memory, it tries to check silently once a day (if you start the software), in this case it will only display a message if an update is available. If it is unable to check for 30 days or more it will give a message asking to check. Does the message say how many days it thinks it is since you last checked for updates?

Are you running it with an administrative account or a limited user? It should run fine as a standard user, but worth checking.

Electronics Assistant stores settings in two locations, %ProgramData%\Electronics 2000\Electronics Assistant and %AppData\Electronics 2000\Electronics Assistant (paste these into windows explorer to go to the folders). Each contains a Settings.xml file, the first location holds settings common to all users, including the version number and date of last update check. The latter holds settings for your user account - window positions, options etc. Try deleting both these files (without Electronics Assistant running), and restart the program. You'll be prompted to register again, but you can cancel this. You'll also need to reset anything you customised in Options.

You could also disable 'Display update reminder' in the options window.

Hello Simon
Many thanks for your response.
Something weird is happening - I have deleted such *.xml files as I could find, checked that there is only one copy of EA running, cleaned the registry, and indeed switched of the display update reminder feature, and twice uninstalled and reinstalled EA. All to no effect - EA still nags me - now on 236 days! I am thinking that I will have to reinstall W7 - a job I am not looking forward to.
Regards, David

How odd. Electronics Assistant doesn't use the registry, so you can rule that out (version 3 did, but version 4 stores everything in the two xml files). I've just checked the code, and it is supposed to silently check for updates every 10 days, only showing a message if there is a new version, or if 30 days pass without a check (this includes if it is more than 30 days since you last ran the program - there are no update processes running in the background when EA is closed). All update functions are stopped if the 'check for updates' option is unchecked.

The relevant entries in the xml files are:

"AutoUpdate" in the appdata folder, this should be "False" if the 'check for updates' option is unticked, or "True" if it is ticked
"LastUpdate" in the programdata folder, which should show the data of the last update check in MM--DD-YY format (mine currently shows "01-28-2016")

Perhaps checking what entries you have might help, also check the "AutoUpdate" setting changes if the option is changed. I'm wondering if Electronics Assistant is somehow writing another xml file elsewhere, or file permissions are preventing it being written. If "AutoUpdate" is always false you could try manually editing the xml file to "True" (without the quotes) to see if this stops the messages.

Update. Goodness knows what was wrong, but a re-installation of W7 (and all software!) fixed all the errors.

Hurrah! Good to know it's sorted, re-installing everything is always painful - especially downloading all the Windows updates. Perhaps worth taking an image you can restore to in the future?
