Basic phone speaker kit

Hi guys,
I'm new to the forum, so first of all thanks for having me.
Anyway, I'm building a mobile phone speaker resembling the Gramovox speaker, albeit a little simpler and more 'rustic'. It's a box with a horn sticking out of it (basically) and there will be a speaker at the end of the horn (the horn amplifies it and makes the audio sound like an old gramophone). I need to work out the electronics side, and I could use some help.
What I want is a simple volume, on/off, mains power supply and speaker. It sounds really simple, but I just can't figure out how to put it all together or where to get the components (or what I need). I'm based in South East England, near Eastbourne (if that helps). Could someone tell me how to wire this up and what to use? Will I need a preamp?
Thanks a bunch,
Joe
EDIT: I don't mind if the volume is a pot or a slider (or anything else for that matter) and I'd like to keep this really simple (partly because I know very little about speakers, and partly because I want this to look vaguely rustic and old fashioned)
