Stepper Motor Driver

I am running a 12volt Mini Hybrid Stepper Motor controlled by a 5 volt power system using a 14017 Semi and 4 TIP41C Transistors, my problem is the Transistors get very hot very quickly,
yet when I run a standard stepper motor the transistors stay cool but the 5 volt Regulator gets hot. Any suggestions would help.
