HiFi blocker/jammer

When I first started in Electronics many years ago I remember my boss saying his mate built a blocker to stop the pubs disco next door geting too loud.
I don't know if it was a noise cancelling device because he lived next door. Or maybe a tone generator that was amplified by the disco amps.
When they turned the disco down - he left them to it.
This has always intrigued me. Unfortunately I went on to learn digital electronics, and have done hardly any r/c or filter circuit theory.
With all these mobile phone blockers and easily made radio broadcast blockers I wonder how he did it?
Always bugged me!
The disco must have found it really weird as it would have only happened at that pub!
