I have a pump sump, operated by a float switch, situated in my garden which is wired to the mains and would like to be able to monitor how many times the pump switches on. Does anyone know of a cost effective way to do this ?

The quickest and easiest way is to use an impulse counter that advances each time it sees voltage on the trigger lead.

You can get them for 115 VAC, 220 VAC, 24 VAC, I think the best way is a 12/24 volt counter using a transformer as needed.
Going that route allows you to run the wires with out the headaches of high voltage circuits.

Here is a link to one type that is available here in the US. I am using the link to show you what I am talking about, don't have a coronary when you see the price. If you search around there are suppliers that have these, I have also seen suppliers that handle overstocks and closeouts at lower prices.
