okay, thank you Paul.

I think as this is all new to me I will start with just adding a switch to a set of fairy lights just to see how that goes. I'll pick up some in the week and try this.

I presume that if i am ignoring the current switch (as it is a cheap little black slide one) i will need to disconnect these wires and solder the switch wires in their place? or could the current wires be cut and extended and then leave the current switch in the on position so the circuit running straight to the new switch?

also the new switch wires seem to be 15cm, if i needed more could I just cut in the middle and ad wire using those little crimp clips to extent or does it not work like that?

I am confused...

There are two ways to extend the wires, snip the old switch off extend the two wires and clip or solder the two wires to the two wires or terminal pins on the new switch.

Or you could leave the old switch in place, and add two wires and attach them to the new switch, solder or crimp its up to you. The LEDs will only switch off if both switches are switched off, if either switch is on the LEDs will be on.

If you put 4 (fairy light ) battery boxes together you can make a 12v power supply, but that's another story.

If you search eBay for electronics kit, or beginners electronic kit, there are loads of them. If you are into model making its well worth getting into electronics. You can light things, make lights flash, make things move etc.
A book on beginner electronics is a good start. You sound young, its a good life skill to understand electronics.
