Flashing LED or a 555

Hi clever ones I need some advice please. I am quite new to electronics and want to start off on some basics. I want to make a flashing LED circuit. I have looked at the circuits that use a 555 chip and they look fine but I have noticed in Maplins (can I say that?) that they sell a Red Flashing UB 10mm LED. If I connect that to a power supply will it simply flash? and if not what's it for? Can I blow it if I get the polarity wrong? Thanks in advance. :)

Why not ask Maplins?

No point asking maplins because they delete any thing that does not make them look good, if you ask something they change the question or answer... I hate that.
You may as well be talking to their sales team, they tell you their stuff is good and delete any contrary view.
