need help substituting part (inductor)
need help substituting part (inductor)
I want to build the 3Volt to 9Volt DC Converter described on p. 12 of Everyday Practical Electronics (EPE), June 2007 issue.
I need a Neosid 17-732-22 14.8mm powdered iron, ring-core toroid but this component is extinct.
Can anyone make recommendations about subsitution of this part with something similar? I don't have the project board yet and it is possible I cannot use the board sold by EPE if I do not use the specified component; I might have to make my own board.
thanks

Re: need help substituting part (inductor)
Hi
Looking at the project, the part in question is a 14.8mm powdered-iron toriod core, onto which you wind 30 turns of wire to product the 47uH inductor required. Since there aren't any pins on it the fitting to the PCB in't so critical. Try Farnell (http://www.farnell.com) or RS (http://www.rswww.com) for a suitable alternative. Any powdered iron core of approximately the same diameter should suffice. If this doesn't turn up a suitable replacment you could try asking on EPE's 'chat zone' at http://www.epemag.co.uk, someone on there might well know of a suitable alternative.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

I tried twice to register on EPE's "Chat Zone" but was unable to do so, but you told me what I needed to know.
