INPUT PROTECTION FOR UNIVERSAL INTERFACE

HELLO !
I AM TRYING TO BUILD A SIMPLE DYNAMOMETER FOR MY 50cc ROADRACING BIKE USING A VELLEMAN K8055 UNUVERSAL INTERFACE.
I WANT TO READ THE SPEED OF THE ENGINE BY MEASURING THE PULSES ACROSS THE IGNITION COIL / CONTACT POINTS ( LOW TENSION 12v SIDE ).
ESSENTIALLY I NEED AN OPTICALLY ISOLATED SWITCH TO CONNECT TO THE INTERFACE, TO PROTCT THE INTERFACE AND COMPUTER FROM ANY POTENTIAL SPIKES ON THE INPUT.
IN ANY CASE THE INPUT REQUIRES A SWITCH WHICH WHEN CLOSED PULLS THE CONNECTON TO GROUND.
THE SWITCH WOULD HAVE TO OPERATE AT ABOUT 250Hz MAXIMUM I THINK ( THE ENGINE COULD POTENTIALLY RUN AT 15,00 RPM ITS A TWO STROKE SO FIRES EVERY REV SO THATS 15,000 / 60.....I THINK ?)
ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS FOR THIS ?
I'D NEED VALUES FOR THE COMPONENTS AS I'M A BIT OF A NUMBSKULL ELECTRONICS WISE ( MECHANICAL ENGINEER YOU SEE !! )
