Electrical Engineering 101: Everything You Should Have Learned in School but Probably Didn't - Darren Ashby, North-Holland Publishing Co. 2006, ISBN 0750678127 - Practical book covering the gap between theory and practice, filling in all the bits they didn't teach you at school. Focussing on the practical side of electronics the book includes sections on circuit analysis, equivalent components, troubleshooting and much more. Also included is a free software CD (including Electronics Assistant).

Surface Mount Technology: Principles and Practice - Ray Prasad, Kluwer Academic Publishers 1988, ISBN 0442205279 - A guide to surface mount principles, industry practices and options. Useful to students and anyone involved in the design or manufacture of SMT assemblies. More info can be found on the the author's website here.

The Definitive Guide to How Computers Do Math: Featuring the Virtual DIY Calculator - Maxfield, 2005, ISBN 0471732788 - An introduction to how computers work in general, and in particular how they perform mathamatical calculations. Includes a CD-ROM containing a virtual calculator, used for the practical laboratory exercises in the book. The material in the book is complemented by extra downloads and information on the web site.

The Art of Electronics - Horowitz & Hill, 2nd Edition, Cambridge University Press 1989, ISBN 0521370957 - An invaluable book covering theory of transistors, op-amps, logic gates, microprocessors and more. The book also explains basics such as how to draw circuit diagrams and how to use an oscilloscope, and draws on the authors practical experience to provide a no-nonsense, hands-on guide.
